The 2022 Hyundai Tucson and 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport may not be natural-born rivals, but both offer plenty of style and affordability. Here’s how they compare.
2022 Hyundai Tucson
Above Average: Long factory warranty; three years free scheduled maintenance; hybrid and plug-in-hybrid models; available all-wheel drive.
Below Average: No volume or tuning knobs for the audio system; styling might not be for everyone; awkward pushbutton shifter.
Consensus: Underneath its wild sheetmetal, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson has a spacious cabin and offers loads of high-end features. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants add to Tucson’s appeal.
2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Above Average: Sharp styling; strong warranty; lots of features for the money; AWD available.
Below Average: Dated interior materials; stiff ride; Apple CarPlay/Android Auto not standard in lower trims; small dealer network; poor resale value.
Consensus: The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a value-packed, affordable subcompact SUV with lots of standard equipment and a great warranty for a fair price.
Tucson vs. Outlander Sport: Affordable Alternatives
The Hyundai Tucson is freshly redesigned for 2022 and is larger, has eye-catching new styling, and features new tech. The Tucson is powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with 187 horsepower mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and is available with front- or all-wheel drive.
New to the range is the Tucson Hybrid with 226 horsepower and standard AWD; there’s also a Tucson Plug-in Hybrid. EPA combined fuel economy for the base engine is 29 mpg (FWD) and 26 mpg (AWD), with the Hybrid at 37 to 38 mpg. The PHEV, meanwhile, has an estimated 261 horsepower and offers 32 miles of electric range.
Wild new styling adorns a body that’s larger than before and rides on a longer wheelbase. Passenger space is generous and cargo space has increased as well. An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, while a 10.25-inch unit with navigation comes in upper trims, though its lack of physical volume and tuning knobs maybe be off-putting. A digital instrument cluster is available as well.
The Tucson is available in SE, SEL, SEL Convenience, N Line, SEL Premium, and Limited trim levels. The Hybrid trims are Blue, SEL Convenience, and Limited. Upper trims have a robust list of tech features such as adaptive cruise control, wireless charging, and heated front and rear seats.
Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport boasts sharp styling, a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty, and is priced from $21,445. A 148-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard in the Outlander Sport, while a 168-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder is available as an upgrade. The larger, more powerful engine is almost as fuel-efficient as the 27-mpg base engine, losing just 2 mpg in the EPA’s combined gas mileage rating.
Six variants of the Outlander Sport are available: S, ES, LE, BE, SE, and GT. The highest tiers (SE and GT) offer features like heated seats, while the LE trim is the entry point for standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The mid-range LE and BE trims also offer exterior appearance upgrades like black side mirror housings and black-accented 18-inch alloy wheels.
No matter which trim you choose, you’ll find 21.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats or 49.5 cubic feet with the rear bench folded flat. That second row will work fine for younger kids and smaller adults, but taller passengers will prefer the front seat.
All-wheel drive is available (standard on Outlander Sport GT) on all models except the base S, which is front-drive only. All Outlander Sports use a CVT transmission.
Available AWD; engine choices; warranties.
