Toyota HiLux owners will soon have access to a luxury option that has until now only been available on the most expensive variant.
Australia’s top-selling car – the Toyota HiLux – will soon be available with added convenience and a piece of luxury equipment that has until now only been fitted to the dearest model in the line-up.
The remote-control roller-shutter ute-tub cover that is a standard feature on the Toyota HiLux Rogue since the updated model arrived in September 2020 – which opens and closes at the press of a button, rather than via a clumsy retractable lever activated by a loose strap – is about to become available as a dealer-fit option on other Toyota HiLux double cab utes.
While the angled “sail plane” garnish that is a design feature on the 2021 Toyota HiLux Rogue will remain exclusive to the “Cadillac of HiLuxes”, the remote-control roller-shutter cover itself will become available as an option next year on HiLux double-cab models fitted with the luxury tub (as opposed to the workhorse ute tub which has external hooks).
The increased availability of the remote-control roller-shutter cover was announced at this week’s opening of Toyota’s technology centre in the outer Melbourne suburb of Altona, the former site of the Toyota Camry factory which closed in October 2017.
The new technology centre is the same facility that is responsible for the final assembly of the locally-engineered add-ons applied to the Toyota HiLux Rogue and Rugged X editions.
The vehicles are shipped from the Toyota HiLux factory in Thailand in a partially complete form before the locally-engineered finishing touches are fitted to the vehicles before being trucked to Toyota showrooms across Australia.
The Toyota HiLux Rogue is fitted with the remote-control roller-shutter cover, “sail plane” garnishes, Rogue stickers, and marine-grade carpet flooring in the ute tray.
The Toyota HiLux Rugged X is fitted with a hoopless bullbar and LED light assembly, new fender flares and door mouldings, a functional heavy-duty sports bar, heavy-duty tow points front and rear, underbody protection, a ute flooring cover, and a tougher rear bumper.
For now, it is not possible to mix and match the features between the Toyota HiLux Rogue and Rugged X, but the option of the remote-control roller-shutter ute tub cover means Rugged X buyers could remove the heavy-duty sports bar and order a dealer-fit remote-control roller-shutter cover.
Toyota dealers are yet to be advised about pricing or arrival timing, but a Toyota Australia representative said the dealer-fit option is due to be rolled out in the first half of next year.
