Vetting is the process of thoroughly investigating an individual, company, or other entity before making a decision to go forward with a joint project. A background review is a vetting process.
What does police vetting involve?
As a police officer, you’re working in a position of trust. That’s why every potential police officer recruit goes through a thorough vetting stage as part of their application process. This includes disclosing the behaviour of your family and friends to ensure that you aren’t vulnerable to extortion or blackmail.
Can I find out if my boyfriend has a criminal record?
People can approach the Police proactively and ask about their new boyfriend or partner’s past police record. This is known as the “right to ask”. Police can’t tell or disclose every aspect of a partner’s criminal record though, the legislation is limited to convictions involving violence.

Can I CRB check someone?
Checks you can make on someone’s record. Employers can check the criminal record of someone applying for a role. This is known as getting a Disclosure and Barring Service ( DBS ) check. You can request a more detailed check for certain roles, for example in healthcare or childcare.
Can I get a CRB check on someone else?
As with the Standard Check, employers have to apply for Enhanced DBS Checks on behalf of their employees – individuals can’t apply for one.
What does a background check reveal?
Nearly all background checks include a criminal-history check, based on information supplied by the candidate, including their Social Security number. Criminal background checks will reveal felony and misdemeanor criminal convictions, any pending criminal cases, and any history of incarceration as an adult.
